Gestalt Language Processing
Some individuals, especially autistic children, learn language in “chunks” rather than word by word. This is called gestalt language processing. A child might repeat entire phrases they’ve heard from a favorite TV show (“Time to go!”) rather than forming their own original sentences. Over time, these chunks can break down into more flexible, meaningful speech. However, traditional language assessments often misunderstand this natural way of learning and label it as delayed or disordered speech.
At Oceanview Therapy, we are experienced in identifying gestalt language processors and evaluating their communication in a way that respects their natural learning style. Our evaluations ensure that individuals get the right support, focusing on language development that feels comfortable and natural for them rather than forcing neurotypical speech patterns.
