Neurodiversity-Affirming Care

Many traditional speech and language evaluations focus on “fixing” communication differences rather than understanding and supporting them. A neurodiversity-affirming approach recognizes that different ways of communicating—whether through AAC, scripting, echolalia, or limited verbal speech—are valid and meaningful. In children, this might mean supporting communication beyond just spoken words. For adults, it means recognizing lifelong patterns of communication and helping them thrive in their own way rather than conforming to neurotypical expectations.

At Oceanview Therapy, we provide strength-based, neuro-affirming evaluations that focus on each individual’s unique abilities and communication style. Our goal is not to “correct” differences but to help individuals communicate in ways that feel natural, comfortable, and empowering.
