Receptive and Expressive Language

Receptive language refers to understanding spoken or written language, while expressive language is about using words and sentences to communicate thoughts. A child with receptive language difficulties may struggle to follow directions, answer questions, or understand stories read aloud in class. Expressive language difficulties might cause a child to have trouble putting thoughts into words, using correct grammar, or finding the right vocabulary. In adults, these challenges can show up in difficulty understanding conversations, expressing ideas clearly at work, or keeping up with fast-paced discussions.

At Oceanview Therapy, we evaluate both receptive and expressive language skills to identify areas of strength and challenge. Our evaluations help determine whether someone needs additional support in processing and using language effectively in daily life, school, or work settings.
